Johnny Had a Hot Date. . .

and there are a number of things that women come to expect when on a date and Johnny didn’t have a clue. After being set up on a blind date with Jane by mutual friends, a disastrous evening began to ensue…starting with his suit. Now don’t get me wrong, polyester works on a number of things: Halloween costumes, the occasional vintage 70’s disco shirt (worn only in jest, of course); but a tan polyester suit with noticeable dust stains and a scent reminiscent of mothballs is never a good idea for a Saturday night out.

If the suit wasn’t enough to snuff any possibility for romance between Johnny and Jane, then the actual date did the trick. It rained, they got wet. He took her to a steakhouse, she’s a vegetarian. They saw a horror flick, she prefers comedies. And the conversation certainly wasn’t up to par. An end of the evening kiss was definitely out of the question!

Johnny knew he had to make some changes and he knew those changes needed to start with his wardrobe. If he liked the way he looked, he would feel and be more confident on his next date. He needed an image overhaul. He also needed a suit that could go straight from work to a business lunch and on to a romantic dinner for two. Something that would appeal to her and look great on him. A contemporary cut like the 211-Stanton jacket and matching flat front trousers both in color and cut right for him made out of worsted wool and sable mink were exactly what Johnny needed to accentuate his slender frame.

From there he moved on to something a little more casual for those Saturday afternoon strolls in the park. A polo-style shirt that will match any jean or trouser is a must-have for any courting gentleman. The Orme sweater, made of 100% cashmere was his next purchase for those cool fall nights. These few basics, along with custom jeans fit to perfection were all Johnny needed to mix and match his way to a perfect wardrobe.

After his closet was revamped, Johnny was ready for another date but first had to learn the key ingredients every man, even you, should know for a successful date

• Always valet park. No one wants to walk 6 blocks in 4 inch heels. If valet parking is full or isn’t available, drop her off at the door and you hike the 6 blocks. She can put your name on the list while she waits.
• Compliment her appropriately. A nod to her chest won’t score you any points. Try simply noting how lovely she looks, how her eyes sparkle or even notice her fabulous new Jimmy Choo’s (she didn’t wear them for comfort).
• Always be prepared. Johnny certainly wasn’t and Jane was less than impressed when they were caught in the rain. Always bring an umbrella and know how to change a flat. You don’t want Triple AAA to steal your thunder.
• Dress appropriately and let her know what dress code the date calls for. There is nothing worse for a woman than showing up in a cocktail dress and discovering you are going to a Dodgers game. She doesn’t want to be over- or underdressed so fill her in on your plans and ask for her input.
• If you cook ALWAYS ask what she prefers. Vegetarians won’t eat veal no matter what measures you took to prepare the meal. Be sure she doesn’t have any strange allergies or abides by any diet rules. Simply asking if there is anything she won’t eat or doesn’t like is the best and easiest way to find out.
• Always treat your valet, host and waiter with the utmost respect and kindness. Your date will notice and if you act like a jerk to them, she will assume you will someday act like a jerk toward her. Tip them generously; after all, they are helping to make your date a little smoother

With a new wardrobe in his closet and the aforementioned words tattooed in his brain, Johnny is ready for his next date and you should be, too. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. For many you may barely get a first chance.
