Mix and Match
by Andy DeShong
Has it ever occurred to you one time in your life when you opened your closet and amidst the clothes you tell yourself that you have “nothing” to wear? Actually, you have something to wear but the only problem you have is that – you do not know what to wear with what.
Admit it. Sometimes, you have the habit of wearing combos, where you wear a certain shirt with a particular pair of pants. The bad thing about that is people see you monotonously that even when your back is turned against them, they know its you. Dressing to impress people does not mean more clothes in your closet. All you need is a little creativity to mix and match your old clothes.
However, do not “just” mix and match. Mix and match the correct outfit! To be able to play around with your wardrobe, you must keep in mind the following tips.
1. Jeans Rule
You can never go wrong with the right pair of jeans. They are easy to pair with any shirt, colored or not, plain or printed; whether it be a simple t-shirt, polo shirt or long sleeves. The trick here is to wear different jeans with different shirts.
Own them in number because they are the most basic of all clothes. Keep them in colors such as black or brown, but always keep a majority of them in different shades of blue.
2. Contrasting
Light Colors and Dark Colors. – If you do not have the expertise of playing around with the colors of a color wheel, simply stick to this rule: light shirts go with dark pants or vice versa.
For you to do this, create a palette of colors in your closet and not just keep them in your favorite color. Keep them in different shades that come from dark to light. It is important that you have more of basic colors such as white, black, cream, brown, beige, etc. because these colors are easy to pair with other colors.
Plains and Prints. – Plains can be matched with other plains but in most cases, prints can never be matched with prints. If your closet is full of prints, always pair them with a solid color. Printed clothes are likely to be remembered easily, keep this in mind and remember to have more plain-colored clothes more in number than printed ones.
Different Fabric Textures. – The texture of your clothes must come in a variety: silky and coarse, light or heavy, cottony or wooly, etc. Do not make the mistake of keeping everything in the same texture or else mixing and matching clothes could be a problem. It is safe to match fabrics of the same texture. The problem appears in mixing them with clothes having different textures because not all fabric textures could go together.
3. Layering
Layering your shirts is also a good way to mix and match. It’s cool to wear a coat, sweater or long sleeves over a shirt; or a shirt over long sleeves; or a sleeveless over a short sleeve buttoned shirt. Be creative but be careful not to stack too much or else the bulkiness will make you look bigger than you are.
4. Accessory Play
Use accessories like your belt, jewelry, watches, caps and hats, bags and sunglasses. Take note that adding them to your outfit can help create an entirely new look.
5. Shoe Sense
Wear different kinds of shoes to different kinds of outfits. The right shoes can give spice to an outfit and can give a different appeal to the same clothing. For example, jeans if paired with sneakers can make you look sporty and cool while if it is paired with leather shoes, it can give you the classic casual appearance.
Keep shoes in a comfortable number. Always buy the more common colors such as black, dark brown, light brown and white. Only splurge on other colored shoes if you have the budget but keep those in basic colors, the majority.
